Tanglefoot Dance Hall Draws Crowds for Grand Opening Weekend in Downtown Festus

More than 200 guests passed through the doors on the busiest night as dancers, families, and visitors from across Missouri celebrated Festus’ newest entertainment destination.

Downtown Festus welcomed a new destination for country music, dancing, food, and fellowship as Tanglefoot Dance Hall celebrated its official grand opening July 31 through August 2.

Located at 201 E. Main Street, Tanglefoot opened its doors for three days of dancing, drink specials, competitions, raffles, food, and community celebration. Crowds filled the wooden dance floor, gathered around the bar, and spilled outside the building as residents and visitors helped the new business begin its next chapter.

The celebration started with an official ribbon cutting conducted with the Twin City Area Chamber of Commerce. Supporters, employees, friends, family members, local business owners, and community members gathered beneath the Tanglefoot sign to mark the occasion.

“What an incredible way to kick off Grand Opening Weekend,” Tanglefoot shared following the ceremony. “This has been a dream brought to life, and seeing so many smiling faces celebrating with us made today even more special.”

Inside, guests found a spacious dance floor surrounded by warm string lights, colorful overhead lighting, seating areas, and a fully stocked bar. Two large television screens above the bar now display digital menus, allowing Tanglefoot to regularly update its cocktail offerings, drink selections, and food options.

The menu was expanded for the grand opening and now includes additional drinks and a buffalo chicken sandwich served with a house-made sauce. Guests could also order burgers, seasoned fries, wraps, chips, and other selections while watching the activity on the dance floor.

The combination of food, drinks, and dancing is part of Tanglefoot’s effort to create a place where visitors can enjoy an entire evening. Guests can have dinner, meet friends at the bar, learn a dance, compete for prizes, or simply watch experienced dancers take the floor.

Tanglefoot owner Tommy Vogel said the weekend’s attendance exceeded expectations. The dance hall welcomed more than 100 guests on both of its major grand opening nights, with more than 200 people passing through the doors on the busiest night.

Guests traveled from throughout the region to attend the celebration. Vogel said visitors came from St. Charles, Kansas City, and other communities, bringing new people into downtown Festus. Several professional and highly experienced dancers also attended.

“We had people from all over,” Vogel said. “It’s bringing a lot of people down here.”

Much of the weekend’s excitement centered on line dancing and swing dancing competitions. When the competitions began, guests cleared the floor and gathered around the dancers, cheering for their favorites and turning the contests into an interactive show.

Winners received cash prizes and gift cards to Chuck’s Boots. Tanglefoot’s beverage distributors also supplied signs, shirts, jerseys, koozies, jumpsuits, and other merchandise that was raffled or awarded throughout the weekend.

Some guests spun a prize wheel for an opportunity to win. Even the spaces that did not include merchandise offered something memorable, including high fives from the bartenders.

The activities helped create an atmosphere in which the audience became part of the entertainment rather than simply watching from the sidelines.

“Everybody would clear the dance floor, and the crowd would cheer for the different dancers,” Vogel said. “It became like a show. It was very interactive, and it was really cool.”

As the weekend continued, Tanglefoot thanked the community for turning the grand opening into more than the owners and staff had imagined.

“Y’all showed up, and y’all showed out,” the business shared in a message to supporters. “You packed this place to the brim, danced the night away, laughed with us, celebrated with us, and made this weekend everything we dreamed it could be.”

The size of the crowds also tested the new business and gave the Tanglefoot team an opportunity to learn how to improve its operations. At the busiest points, five people worked behind the bar, with additional employees taking orders and preparing food in the kitchen.

Vogel said the team worked to keep lines moving and adjusted throughout the weekend. Following the celebration, he reorganized portions of the bar to make service smoother during future events.

“It was so busy,” Vogel said. “We learned a lot.”

Vogel praised the employees who kept drinks moving, prepared food, assisted customers, and managed the crowded dance floor.

“My staff was awesome,” he said. “They nailed it.”

Tanglefoot also publicly recognized its employees as the “dream team” responsible for helping turn the owners’ vision into a functioning dance hall.

“To the staff at Tanglefoot, we couldn’t be more thankful, proud, and impressed with all of you,” the business wrote. “Thank you for making Tanglefoot everything we dreamed it would be.”

The celebration represented more than the opening of another local business. It introduced a new gathering place to Festus Main Street and gave residents and visitors another reason to spend an evening in the downtown district.

Tanglefoot’s brightly decorated cowboy boot logo reflects the venue’s country personality. The design can be found throughout the dance hall and on branded merchandise, including insulated tumblers featuring the Tanglefoot Dance Hall and Festus Main Street names.

The business has emphasized that dancers of all experience levels are welcome. For experienced dancers, Tanglefoot provides a place to practice familiar steps and meet others who share their interest. For beginners, it offers an opportunity to experience country dancing for the first time in a welcoming environment.

Following the grand opening, Tanglefoot invited guests to submit photographs and videos from the weekend so the business could preserve and share the memories created during its first major event.

Vogel said the goal now is to build on the momentum by continuing to organize interactive events that bring people together and encourage community participation.

“We’re going to keep doing fun events that are community involved and interactive,” Vogel said. “Hopefully, it keeps going from there.”

After a weekend filled with crowded dance floors, competitions, food, prizes, raised glasses, and plenty of boots, Tanglefoot Dance Hall has officially begun its next chapter in the heart of downtown Festus.
