For students who may not feel at home on a traditional court or playing field, the Jeffco Billy Goats offer another way to compete, grow and become part of a team.

The no-cut mountain biking club welcomes boys and girls in middle and high school from Jefferson County and portions of South St. Louis County. Affiliated with the National Interscholastic Cycling Association and the Missouri Interscholastic Cycling League, the team works to build “strong body, mind and character” through cycling.

A Team for Every Rider

Riders do not need previous racing experience. Some arrive comfortable on difficult trails, while others are still learning basic riding skills. Summer practices prepare students for the fall racing season by teaching safe braking, turning, climbing, descending and navigating the roots, rocks and other challenges found on Missouri trails.

Coaches place riders into groups based on their ability and comfort level. Students who want to compete for podium finishes can receive help pursuing those goals. Riders who prefer to improve gradually, enjoy the outdoors and spend time with teammates are equally welcome.

“It’s all about getting more kids on bikes. We’re trying to make a lifelong sport for people.”
Ryan Lee, NICA Coach

That approach gives each rider an opportunity to measure success personally. Coaches may time students on a trail early in the season and return later so they can see their progress. At the end of practices, riders gather to recognize teammates who overcame an obstacle, helped another rider or reached a new goal.

Mountain biking also gives students the camaraderie of a team without leaving anyone on the bench. Riders train together, encourage one another and celebrate every competitor who completes a race, regardless of finishing position.

Confidence, Safety and Community

Safety remains central to every practice. Riders wear helmets, inspect their bicycles before entering the trail and ride with trained coaches. They also learn how to care for their equipment by cleaning chains, repairing tires and recognizing when a bicycle needs professional attention.

The program’s influence reaches beyond race weekends. It introduces young people to a healthy outdoor activity they can continue into adulthood while developing confidence, responsibility and leadership.

Supporting the Next Generation

Community support helps make that opportunity available to more families. Sponsorships can assist with loaner bicycles, helmets, first-aid supplies, communication equipment and other essential gear while helping reduce participation costs.

Families interested in joining the team, volunteering or supporting the Jeffco Billy Goats can learn more through the team’s website.
