On a quiet ranch in Jefferson County, growth does not come from a classroom or a therapy office.

It comes from showing up.

It comes from doing the work.

And sometimes, it starts with standing face to face with a thousand-pound animal, and learning you are capable of more than you thought.

For the women and girls who walk into Gaitway to Her Success, that moment is often the beginning of something much bigger.

“We see it every day… kids who can’t look you in the eye… then they’re making friends.”
— Heather Compton, Executive Director, Gaitway to Her Success

What happens here is not loud.

It is not flashy.

But it is deeply transformative.

More Than Horses: A Program Built With Purpose

Gaitway to Her Success is an equine facilitated learning program, designed to help participants build real-life skills through structured work, mentorship, and connection.

The organization serves:

  • Teen girls (13–18) through the Dream Maker Program
  • Adult women (19+) through the Dream Catcher Program

For teen participants, the program is immersive and structured.

Girls commit eight hours each week, working at the ranch in a setting that mirrors a real job environment. They are expected to show up, contribute, communicate, and complete tasks as part of a team.

They are not just learning about horses.

They are learning how to function in the real world.

“They have a boss, they have a team, they have jobs that they do… we’re preparing them for the workforce.”
— Heather Compton, Executive Director, Gaitway to Her Success

The program also includes a step-by-step curriculum.

Participants begin with ground work. They learn how to safely handle and communicate with horses. As they progress, they earn the opportunity to ride, first individually, then in group settings, and eventually on their own.

Advancement is based on effort, growth, and consistency.

There are expectations.

There is accountability.

And there is a waiting list behind them.

Where Confidence Is Built

While the structure is intentional, the growth is not forced.

Participants are not told they are becoming more confident.

They experience it.

“If I can get this thousand pound animal to partner with me, I can probably get through biology.”
— Heather Compton, Executive Director, Gaitway to Her Success

Every completed task, every challenge overcome, every moment of connection reinforces something many participants have not fully believed before:

They can do hard things.

The program blends:

  • Work responsibility
  • Social interaction
  • Hands-on horsemanship

Each piece reinforcing the others.

By the time participants leave the ranch each week, they have not just learned something, they have done something.

The Power of Mentorship and Community

One of the most unique aspects of Gaitway to Her Success is how it brings women together across generations.

The Dream Catcher Program allows adult women to participate in their own development while also stepping into mentorship roles.

Some become barn mentors, working alongside the girls and providing guidance, stability, and support.

These are not formal counseling relationships.

They are something often just as important: consistent, positive adult presence.

At the same time, the adult program fills a gap many women quietly experience.

“Adult women in the community have a difficult time making friends… we created a place where they can build relationships over something they’re all learning.”
— Heather Compton, Executive Director, Gaitway to Her Success

Connection happens naturally, through shared work, shared responsibility, and shared purpose.

A Deep Commitment to Horse Welfare

Behind every success story is a carefully managed balance, because the horses themselves are not tools, but partners.

Gaitway to Her Success currently cares for twelve horses, each with their own personality, strengths, and limits. Their workload is carefully monitored to ensure both physical and emotional well-being.

Horses rotate days off, receive ongoing training, and are placed in roles that match their abilities, especially as they age. This individualized care ensures they remain healthy, well-supported, and able to thrive as partners in the program.

Even their living conditions reflect that philosophy. Rather than being isolated, the horses live in herds, maintaining the social connections that are essential to their nature.

It’s a program built not just on impact for people, but respect for the animals that make that impact possible.

The Horses at the Center of It All

The horses are not just part of the experience, they are central to it.

Horses respond to energy, emotion, and presence; offering immediate, honest feedback.

That connection creates breakthroughs that are hard to replicate anywhere else.

When a participant learns to guide and partner with a horse, something shifts internally.

That confidence carries into school, relationships, and everyday life; helping participants tackle challenges they once avoided.

Each horse plays a different role.

Some build confidence.

Some challenge participants to grow.

Some require patience, trust, and persistence.

Pairings are intentional, based on what each participant needs.

A Growing Impact in Jefferson County

Since becoming a nonprofit in 2023, Gaitway to Her Success has grown from serving just a handful of girls to impacting dozens of women and families across the region.

But growth is not unlimited.

The number of participants they can serve is tied directly to space, resources, and the number of horses they can responsibly care for.

Which means the future of the program depends on something simple: community support.

At Gaitway to Her Success, growth does not happen all at once. It happens in small moments.

A girl making eye contact.

A conversation that once felt impossible.

A task completed.

A challenge overcome.

And over time, those moments add up to something powerful.

Confidence.

Connection.

And a belief that maybe, just maybe, you are capable of more than you ever thought.

Those moments don’t happen by accident.

They happen because a community chooses to invest in them; through time, through resources, and in some cases, through deeply personal contributions.

For some, that means donating.

For others, it means volunteering.

And for some, it means trusting the program with something far more personal, allowing their own horses to become part of that impact.

It is that level of trust, generosity, and belief in the mission that makes every one of those moments possible.

“Community members will send us their horses… it’s their way of contributing to the program.”
— Heather Compton, Executive Director, Gaitway to Her Success

That spirit of giving is not limited to supporters alone. Leadership has made that same commitment. Executive Director Heather Compton has chosen to place her own horse into the program, contributing in the same way many in the community have.

“I have benefited so greatly from everybody else’s generosity in my horse journey… it’s time for me to contribute… to be able to contribute an actual horse that will impact them is just so amazing.”
— Heather Compton, Executive Director, Gaitway to Her Success

It is a reflection of how deeply she believes in the work being done, and how grateful she is for the opportunity to be around horses and to help others experience their impact.

It is a level of trust and generosity that reflects just how much this program means to the people around it.
