Business Spotlight: Miles to Explore Turns a Love of Travel Into Personalized Vacations
For Jen Miles, travel has never simply been about getting from one place to another. It is about seeing something new, experiencing a different part of the world, and coming home with stories worth telling.
That love of travel eventually became the foundation for Miles to Explore Travel Agency, where Miles now uses her own travel experience and professional training to help clients build vacations around what they actually want to experience.
Miles began working in the travel industry after her own travel advisor suggested she would be a natural fit for the profession. After gaining experience in the industry, she decided she wanted to build something of her own.
“We love to travel,” Miles said. For her, that love is rooted in the sense of adventure that comes from stepping outside the familiar, seeing a place for the first time, and experiencing something that makes the world feel a little bigger.
It is that feeling she wants her clients to experience, too.
In a world where it is easy to rush from one reservation, excursion, and attraction to the next, Miles believes the details matter. They are what can turn a vacation from a hurried schedule of things to do into something memorable: the right destination, the right pace, the excursion that fits the traveler, and the small pieces that allow someone to stop worrying about logistics and simply enjoy where they are.
That is where Miles sees her role. Her own experiences traveling have given her an appreciation not only for where people go, but for how a trip makes them feel. She brings that perspective to each vacation she plans, working to create the kind of experience her clients will still be excited to talk about long after they come home.
Personalized Travel Planning
Today, Miles specializes in destinations including Hawaii, Riviera Maya, Cancun, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and ocean and river cruises. Alaska is also particularly popular with her clients, while destinations such as Italy and Greece continue to generate growing interest.
But the destination is only one part of what Miles provides.
Her planning process begins with a conversation about the client. She wants to understand what they enjoy, what they do not enjoy, how they like to spend their time, and what they hope to remember when the trip is over.
Someone looking for a relaxing cruise may need a very different recommendation from a traveler interested in snorkeling, excursions, entertainment, or a more active atmosphere. Miles uses those conversations, along with her own experience and industry knowledge, to narrow the possibilities and create an itinerary that feels personal rather than one-size-fits-all.
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Alaska Experience
That attention can become especially important when a traveler has needs that make planning more complicated.
Miles is currently helping a couple prepare for what they hope will be a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Alaska. The husband has Parkinson’s, requiring Miles to think beyond simply selecting a cruise and booking excursions.
The couple wanted the opportunity to experience Alaska fully, including a helicopter trip that will take them onto a glacier. Miles worked to arrange mobility assistance and an adapted experience so that while his wife participates in a sled dog excursion, he can still be part of the adventure and experience the glacier himself.
For Miles, that is what personalized travel planning should look like: understanding what matters to the traveler and finding ways to make as much of that experience possible.
Service That Goes Beyond the Booking
Her involvement does not end once the reservation is made.
Miles gives clients her personal phone number and remains accessible throughout the process. She can assist with cruise registration and pre-booking, answer questions, review travel paperwork, and even deliver documents to a client’s home.
If something goes wrong while a client is traveling, she is still there.
“Travel isn’t from nine to five,” Miles said.
When storms, weather delays, missed connections, or other unexpected travel disruptions arise, Miles becomes the familiar person her clients can turn to. Rather than facing an already stressful situation alone, they can call someone who knows their trip, understands what matters to them, and is ready to help determine the best path forward.
Sometimes that means reassurance. Sometimes it means answering questions, helping sort through options, or working on a new plan when circumstances change. For Miles, being accessible during those moments is part of the care she provides from the first conversation until her clients are safely home.
Professional Training and Reputation
That level of service is also backed by continued professional education. Miles is a Certified Travel Professional and has completed training through Royal Caribbean University, Princess Cruises, ALG Vacations, and Collette. She also serves as secretary of the local St. Louis chapter of the American Society of Travel Advisors.
For Miles, continuing to learn is part of maintaining the reputation and level of service she wants her business to represent.
But one of her favorite parts of the job still comes at the end.
When clients return home and tell her about what they saw, what they experienced, and the memories they made, Miles said that excitement is what makes the work worthwhile.
For someone dreaming about a memorable vacation but overwhelmed by where to begin, her advice is simple.
